322 - Nomtastic Cheesecake Brownies

I'm a bigger girl. I love to eat. While at Craftalicious in November there was a lady who sold cheesecake brownies and I was in heaven. I've been craving them ever since. Well, I found a recipe for them and they are damn tasty. Try a batch and I know you'll agree. I mean, c'mon! Brownies=awesome. Cheesecake=awesome. So it stands to reason that Cheesecake Brownies=NOM NOM NOM!

Ingredients

  • 1 (19.8 ounce) package brownie mix
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese (you can even use light if you're so inclined)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. Prepare the brownie mix as directed by the box. Preheat oven to temperature indicated on box. Grease an 8x8 inch pan.
  2. Spread the brownie batter evenly into the pan. Using an electric mixer, beat together the cream cheese, egg and sugar until smooth. Dollop the cream cheese mixture on top of the brownie batter. Swirl together using a spoon or knife or finger.
  3. Again, listen to the box and bake it for however long it says. I found with mine that the minimum time was just perfect. Brownies will be done when a toothpick or knife or finger inserted comes out clean. Cool in the pan (if you can wait that long), then cut into bars and serve.
  4. Become the envy of everyone you know. These are just so damn good.

320 - Yarn Artists, You Need This!

Are you a knitter or crocheter? Are you tired and winding balls by hand? I know I was! That's why I got my hands on one of these babies!

The Royal Yarn Winder is a fabulous investment! They are a little pricey but they are MORE than worth it. As an example, I just wound a 400g ball of yarn into 5 more easily handled balls of yarn in all of 5 minutes. Okay, so they aren't so much balls as little centre pulled cakes, but they don't roll around and are awesome. You need one.

318 - Redd's Annual Cardigan - Progress

I've been on a hiatus from my cardigan. Not because I wanted to, but because I had to. So far, this December, I've sold 10 Jayne Cobb hats. TEN! So needless to say every waking moment was knitting for customers, leaving no time to knit for me.

Now that I haven't made a hat in a few days (phew!) I decided to take a crack at this sweater again. I'm just about done the second sleeve. Hooray!!

317 - New Year means New Plans

So 2010 is shaping up to be very different than 2009.

I've been brainstorming for new directions for Dame Named Redd Designs. The answer that came to me is The Beautiful Dame. I've always wanted to try my hand at soap and eyeshadow and 2010 I will make my pipe dreams a reality. It's going to be EPIC!

There is SO much going on in the world of The Dame right now.

Please all cross your fingers and send good vibes and maybe by this time next week I can share some of it with you!

315 - Random Redd Fact

Little known fact, I love fountain pop. I don't know why but it tastes SO much better than cans or bottles. When I go somewhere to eat I always try to get a large Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke. If I ever win the lottery I'm definitely going to buy a fountain drink machine and it will be glorious.

313 - Owww

So if you've been following me on twitter then you know that I've been having lots of tooth pain. I went to an emergency dentist appointment yesterday and ended up getting an impromptu partial root canal. The rest of it is booked for December 8th. Owwwwww. Turns out I've been in so much pain because I have an infected something, and like a million cavities.

my appointment was not nearly this cool.

312 - Redd's Annual Cardigan

So every year since I've started knitting, I have started a cardigan for myself. The first year, it ended up being too short and wasn't the right size. I tried to fix it once it was all done but I was still new and it didn't work and I ended up throwing it out. Stupid, especially since it ended up costing me like $80 in yarn.

Last year I tried again but in much cheaper yarn. I lost interest when I got to the last section and then just gave up.

This year, in the interest of tradition, I'm trying again. About a month ago I bought a really cute pattern but didn't have time to make it as I was trying to get ready for holiday shows. Now that they are done, I'm taking a crack at it.

It's just SO cute! I'm making it in black and may leave out the flowers, but otherwise, it will be this adorable!

I'll keep you updated on it, and hopefully this year's attempt will end in a real, wearable cardigan.

308 - Meet Beatrice!

So a family tradition we have is for the holidays you get a "Group Gift." You pick an item that you want that is about $100 and all the family members pitch in. That way you know everyone is getting what they want and no one has to guess.

I had mentioned to my mom that I really wanted a spinning wheel but that it was WAY above Group Gift price range. Well, my birthday is 8 days after Christmas so she decided that we could do a combination Christmaskah/Birthday gift and get me a wheel.

I, of course, was thrilled and immediately started scouring Etsy for my very first spinning wheel. Well, I found one that was beautiful beyond words at Katrina's Wool World. It was a Country Craftsman and a Saxony style. What's a Saxony you may be wondering. Close your eyes and picture a spinning wheel. You think of Sleeping Beauty right? Well, that's a Saxon style wheel.

She arrived. I named her Beatrice, a perfect old lady name (though to be fair, I think Beatrice would be an awesome name if I ever had a daughter). She needed some tuning and oiling but now she runs great and I love her.

Picture 023

she even matches my wood panelling!

I couldn't have asked for a better buying experience. Kathy was super friendly and kept me updated on the shipping every step of the way. When Bea got here, I was having LOTS of problems getting her to work but Kathy was *super* patient and e-mailed me until Bea was working.

Beatrice now lives in my studio. I'm holding on to her even though it's not the holidays yet because, well, I don't know, but Mom didn't seem opposed to me keeping her early.

305 - Craftalicious!

So a week and a bit ago my friend Jen posted on her blog that there was a new craft show in town and they were looking for people to apply. I saw the name and instantly sent off my submission. This Friday I got an e-mail back from them, I'm in!

302 - New Camera!

So the only perk to Pauly traveling so much is that he racks up the Aeroplan points like nobody's business. A few months ago he got me an Acer netbook with his points because my Dell died. Just last week my new camera arrived! It's pretty bitching! I have always wanted a digital SLR but there's no way I could justify spending that much money on one. Hooray for Aeroplan points!

(obviously not MY camera as I can't take a picture of it with it)

I love it! I still have lots to learn with it, and I ordered a macro lens for it that should be here any day now.  I can't wait to start taking product pictures with it for my shops!

Here is one of the first pictures I took with it. Ash loves hamming it up for the camera!

299 - Friday Funny

I'm on staycation right now. It's pretty sweet. Ash went to Nova Scotia with his Auntie Melissa (Paul's sister) to visit Paul's parents for the long weekend. Paul's still overseas, but he gets home on Sunday morning so I'm pretty excited to see him.

Spending my alone time sleeping in, knitting, cleaning and getting ready for the Basement Artists show.

298 - Bad Redd, Bad

So once again, I've gone too long without an entry. Paul was in Europe from Sept. 26 till Oct 1 and then was home for 2 days and then off to South America. Friday was his birthday and Saturday we had a Rockband party for him. It was nice to have our closest friends over and just have fun.

I've also been busy trying to get ready for my Basement Artists show on the 17th and my first ever school craft fair on Nov. 21 and custom orders! Busy busy busy but I'm hoping for as good a holiday season as I did last year. Cross your fingers for me!

To show my apologies for my neglect, please accept this picture with love:

297 - Globe Trotting

So as you may or may not know by now, my husband travels around the world on business. He’s been all over the world; Australia, London, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Germany and in the next month will be on his way to Brazil and Mexico.

Before Paul became a globe trotter, I must admit I was pretty naive about traveling. I honestly believed that you could just buy a plane ticket and go wherever you wanted. Well, I was wrong. What we didn’t know is that to even to just *enter* some countries, you have to have a Visa.

This can be a huge hassle especially when you need your passport to apply for a visa AND to travel. Sometimes, these things run the risk of overlapping and you could be grounded.

I recently learned of this site called Global Visas. It’s this awesome site that gives you all the information you need about Visas, for work, travel or even immigrating! They even have immigration specialists who can fully assist you and help you avoid the headache. Who doesn’t want to avoid it? We all have busy lives and have better things to be doing.

So before you plan on moving, or traveling for work or pleasure, be sure to check out Global Visas! And for all you small business owners, and I know a lot of you read this site, they can even help you get all the information you need about moving your business abroad!

Happy Globe Trotting!

296 - Meet the Cast - Episode Three - Fredward

So I talk about my family on here but I’m not sure I’ve ever done proper introductions. I’m going to start with my fur babies and then the flesh and blood.

I've already told you about Cory and Elly.

Next up is Freddie.

Picture 005

So as I was checking the mail today my neighbour's door was open. Ash mentioned to him that he thought the turtle was cool (we were watching him and the cat this weekend while they were away) and James asked if we wanted him. Being the sucker that I am I totally said yes.

The neighbours have a pond in the backyard that he used to be in till it got chilly. My little Freddie didn't even have a name. James is just glad that he'll get more attention now.

Yes, yes, I know all about turtles and salmonella. But I promise to be a hand washing nazi after he's been held.

Elly has already started to sit and stare at him. That's gotta be awkward for Freddie.

291 - Lookie What I Can Do!

So as you may or may not remember, I took up spinning. The *only* problem with spinning on a spindle, is that you don't get very much end product. As a result I have many small balls of various spun wool with nothing to make.

Until yesterday! I found a pattern for a scarf that doesn't take much wool (well it takes all of whatever colour I choose but it's better than staying a ball right?), used super bulky weight and didn't seem like it would make me tear my hair out.

I present to you the scarf that I made from roving! I love the idea that I did this from fluff to scarf. What can I say? I rock!

285 - Please Send Good Vibes

My dad goes into surgery tomorrow. He calls today to find out the time. I am so worried. It's routine surgery but when you're 60 and your heart's not as healthy as it used to be, nothing is routine.

So please, keep Papa in your thoughts tomorrow and I will let you know when it's all over. Thanks!

284 - Last Run of Jayne Cobb Hats EVER!

So I've been making Jayne Cobb Cunning hats for over a year now.

I needed to re-stock my yarn supply this week but I couldn't find the orange anywhere, I went to 3 different places. I went online, turns out it's discontinued and couldn't find it ANYWHERE!

As luck would have it Michaels had 9 balls of it left so  I bought it all. So when this is gone, there will be no more hats to be had.

So, get one before they're gone forever. Tell your friends, you can all look cunning!

283 - Redd's Outrageously Delicious Sammich

I have a favourite sammich. I'm eating one right now while I'm writing this. It is by far the best sammich I have ever eaten and I wanted to share it with all of you!

Picture 011

You too can make your very own Redd's Outrageously Delicious Sammich with just five ingredients:

*foccacia bread

*hummus (I use spicy for the extra kick)

*deli chicken (I use Schneiders Fat Free chicken breast)

*provolone cheese (though havarti has worked in the past with great success)

*alfalfa sprouts (you could probably use your sprout of choice)

I started typing out directions but seriously, it's a sammich. Use common sense and put it together. Now eat it and say NOM NOM NOM!

278 - My First Sock!

So I'm making a pair of socks for my dad for his 60th birthday.

277 - I Think I'm Addicted.

I think I may have a fibre addiction. I just got in from a mini shopping spree.

First, we went to Wabi Sabi. I <3 that store like whoa!

I got 6m of wine red, 6m of blue and 12m of black. I also got a couple grab bags of little bits to try my hand at making felted beads for necklaces for the jewelry section of the Emporium.

Picture 007

Since I'm also on a sock kick, despite never having finished a sock, I bought a ball of Tofutsies. It's a  50% superwash wool, 25% soy silk, 22.5% cotton and 2.5% Chitin. What's chitin you may be asking yourself? Chitin is fibre made from shrimp and crab shells. I couldn't make that up.

Picture 009

Then the yarn bug was in my system. We then went to Zellers and I might have gotten carried away...

Picture 002

In my defense, I have plans for all of this. I have some big and not so big ideas for the Emporium and needed some stuff to get it rolling. August will be busy as I want to have my shop ready for the holiday season. Yikes.

Anyways, that's my day. I really, really love yarn and roving and yes, even crustacean wool.
